Over The Moon is a co-created project with the theatre maker and perfomer Peyvand Sadeghian & Matthew C. Robinson. Over The Moon navigates the profound paradox of human existence through space exploration, walking the thin line between awe and terror. It transforms NASA's Apollo 11 archives into an immersive theatrical environment where scientific precision meets human experience. Through innovative projection mapping techniques inspired by vintage broadcast technology, mission transcripts become dynamic performance texts, while archival footage merges with live feed video to create responsive visual landscapes examining our relationship with progress.
The piece layers multiple perspectives - from Mission Control's meticulous procedures to an astronaut's first glimpse of Earth from space. Using a hybrid system of analogue and digital tools, including theremin-controlled video synthesis and multi-surface projection, we create environments that shift between documentary reality and psychological expression. Rather than serving as backdrop, the technical elements respond to and amplify the live performance, creating a sensory landscape that mirrors both the vastness of space and the intimacy of personal struggle. We excavate overlooked narratives within historic transcripts - the mundane exchanges, moments of doubt, fleeting joy
By juxtaposing the clinical precision of space flight procedures against the messy reality of human consciousness, and physically manipulating historical materials live on stage, we transform institutional documentation into visceral experience. The work's innovative use of analogue and digital technology creates environments where audiences experience this interplay of scale - from the infinite to the microscopic, the institutional to the deeply personal.
Access features are fundamental to the work's architecture. BSL interpretation becomes a choreographic element, audio description builds worlds, and touch tours of space race memorabilia deepen audience connection. These integrated elements enhance the experience for all audiences while ensuring multiple pathways for engagement.
Over The Moon offers neither answers nor neat conclusions. Through the synthesis of archival footage, live performance, and responsive design, we invite audiences to experience the disorientation of zero gravity alongside the weight of human experience.
